Storm pounds N.J. with heavy snow, strong winds

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, from midnight to 6 PM, and the State of New Jersey and Union County are both warning of hazardous weather.

A Winter Storm Warning is issued when a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent. Significant and hazardous winter weather is defined as a combination of 5 inches or more of snow/sleet within a 12-hour period or 7 inches or more of snow/sleet within a 24-hour period, and/or enough ice accumulation to cause damage to trees or powerlines, and/or a life threatening or damaging combination of snow and/or ice  accumulation with wind.

For this storm, local forecasters are predicting rain starting after midnight, followed by sleet and finally snow. This will cause snow to accumulate on the ground and snow totals may range as high as 6″-12″ for the northern half of New Jersey. In addition, winds may reach 10-25 MPH, gusting over 30 MPH in some areas.

Motorists are reminded to only travel in an emergency. If you must travel keep an extra flashlight, food, water and blankets in your vehicle in case of an emergency. For more driving tips, visit the National Safety Council’s website.

However, even at home, the weather can be dangerous. Residents are encouraged to check on their neighbors, especially those that are sick or elderly. Experts remind you to dress in layers and that mittens will keep your hands warmer than gloves. If shoveling, take breaks as necessary to not exhaust yourself, switching hands, bending with your knees & keeping the shovel close to your body will help avoid straining muscles. If using a snow blower, be sure it is off before trying to clear any jammed snow from the discharge chute.
