On July 3, the  Bedminster Charities organization is hosting a community picnic, featuring a Field of Honor display of 200 3-foot by 5-foot American flags, at River Road Park, according to a news release.

The picnic, being held 1-4 p.m., features live music by the popular New Jersey band Hoi Polloi. There is no charge to attend; food and drinks will be available for purchase.

During the Independence Day celebration, the public is invited to stroll through the Field of Honor, which pays tribute to men and women who have served our country. Flags on display are available for adoption for $40 each, and can be identified with the buyer’s personal message. Participants can pick up their personalized flags on July 5 after 4 p.m., according to the news release.

Proceeds from the Field of Honor will benefit the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.

“This a great opportunity for members of our community to honor loved ones, show your patriotism and support a worthwhile local charity,” said Project Chair Robin Ray, who also serves as president of The Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House board of trustees. “A field of 200, seven-foot-tall American flags standing in solemn formation will be an awe-inspiring site.”

Field of Honor flags can be purchased at the July 3 picnic or at any of the following Bedminster Charities member organizations:

  • Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Department, 100 Miller Lane, Bedminster
  • Far Hills-Bedminster First Aid Squad, 500 Route 202, Far Hills
  • Center for Contemporary Art, 2020 Burnt Mills Road, Bedminster
  • Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House, 3055 River Road, Bedminster

  • Bedminster School PTO, 234 Somerville Road, Bedminster
  • Township of Bedminster, One Miller Lane, Bedminster
  • Borough of Far Hills, 6 Prospect St., Far Hills

Bedminster Charities is a non-profit organization established in 2005 to raise funds for the seven local organizations that provide critical services to the Bedminster and Far Hills communities. Sponsors of the July 3 event include  Investors Bank, Far Hills Pharmacy and Hewitt Home Heating Oil.

Starting out as a golf event, and now Fall Fest, the Bedminster Charities Organization has raised close to $500,000 to support: Clarence Dillon Public Library, Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Department, Far Hills-Bedminster First Aid Squad, Center for Contemporary Art, Bedminster School Parent-Teacher Organization, the Jacobus Vanderveer House and Museum and Pottersville Volunteer Fire Company.
